Mild steel is the workhorse of the fabrication trade. It is strong, economical, easy to cut, bend and weld, and it takes paint or galvanising well. For most gates, burglar bars, frames, brackets and structural work in Cape Town, it is simply the right material for the job.
We fabricate mild steel to measure at our workshop — one-off items, replacements for something that has failed, and larger runs for builders and businesses.
Gates and fencing. Driveway gates, pedestrian gates and fencing, built to the opening rather than to a standard size.
Burglar bars and security screens. Fixed and removable, made to fit existing window openings.
Frames, brackets and supports. Machine frames, shelving, mounting brackets, lintels and general structural work.
Staircases and structures. Steel stairs, platforms and frames, fabricated in sections and installed on site.
Repairs and modifications. Reinforcing, extending or altering existing steelwork rather than replacing it.
Most fabrication is cutting and forming rather than welding. Getting clean, square cuts and accurate bends is what separates a piece that fits from one that needs forcing into place. Mild steel rusts. That is the trade-off for its cost and strength, and it is entirely manageable — but it has to be planned for rather than ignored.
Galvanising gives the longest protection for exterior work. Powder coating looks better and performs well provided the coating is not breached. Paint is the cheapest and needs the most upkeep. Near the sea, the honest conversation is whether the item should be mild steel at all, or whether stainless or aluminium will cost less over its life.

Almost everything we make is to measure, because the whole reason to have something fabricated is that a standard product does not fit. Accurate measurements and a photo of the opening or mounting point are enough to start a quote.
