Most stainless sold in South Africa is grade 304. It is the default, it is cheaper, and for the majority of indoor uses it is entirely appropriate. Within a few kilometres of the Atlantic, that calculation changes.
The Actual Difference
Both grades are austenitic stainless steels with similar chromium and nickel content. The distinction is that 316 contains molybdenum, typically around two to three percent.
Molybdenum substantially improves resistance to chlorides – salt. That single addition is why 316 is described as the marine grade, and why it costs noticeably more.
What Chlorides Do
Chloride ions attack the passive chromium oxide layer at specific points rather than uniformly. The result is pitting corrosion: small, deep pits rather than general surface rust.
Pitting is more dangerous than surface rust precisely because it looks minor. A surface that appears lightly speckled can have pits penetrating significantly into the material, and in a load-bearing component that matters.
Salt-laden air carries chlorides inland, deposits them on surfaces, and they concentrate as moisture evaporates. This is why a balustrade in Sea Point faces a completely different environment to the same balustrade in Durbanville.
Where the Line Falls
There is no exact distance where 304 stops working and 316 becomes essential – it depends on exposure to prevailing wind, direct salt spray, whether the item is rinsed by rain, and how often it is cleaned.
As a practical guide: direct coastal exposure, anything getting salt spray, and anything structural in a marine environment warrants 316. Well inland and under cover, 304 is usually fine. In between, it comes down to how visible the item is and how much a premature replacement would cost.
The Cost Argument
316 costs more per kilogram. Against that, replacing a pitted balustrade a few years early costs considerably more than the original upgrade would have.
For a visible architectural item in a coastal position, specifying 316 is usually the cheaper decision over the life of the installation. For something sheltered and easily replaced, it is often unnecessary.
Neither Grade Is Maintenance-Free
Both benefit from being rinsed with fresh water periodically in a coastal setting. Salt that sits on the surface has time to work; salt that is washed off does not. This one habit extends the life of stainless work more than any other.

Can you tell 304 and 316 apart by looking?
No. They appear identical. Distinguishing them reliably requires a chemical spot test or material certification, which is why buying from a supplier who can confirm the grade matters.
Will 316 stainless never rust?
It resists chloride attack far better than 304, but no stainless is completely immune. Poor fabrication practice, carbon steel contamination or heavy salt build-up left uncleaned can still cause staining or pitting in 316.
